AI SDR vs buying leads: the list decides

AI SDR vs buying leads: the software writes the emails, the list decides who gets them. What each lead needs, what each path costs, and how to test a list

An AI SDR writes and sends your emails. The list decides who gets them. Give it a weak list and it sends weak emails faster. That means more bounces, more spam reports, and a sending domain at risk. Buying leads fixes the list, not the writing, so many teams need both.

AI SDR means software that writes and sends sales outreach on its own. SDR means sales development representative: the person who finds prospects and books first meetings.

What the vendors say themselves

Instantly sells an AI SDR. Its own guide, dated 2026-06-26, puts it plainly: "AI agents inherit the quality of the inputs you give them."

AiSDR shows its own result range on its pricing page: 1 to 3 meetings for every 100 contacts. It calls these directional, not a promise. We checked the page on 2026-10-30. That range is for cold contacts. We found no published range for contacts who engaged with content on your topic. We have not published one either.

What an AI SDR needs from each lead

An AI SDR writes from the fields you give it. A missing field makes the email generic, or wrong.

Field What the software does with it Without it
Job title and level Picks the problem to write about One email for a CTO and an intern
Company, size and industry Sets the scale and the examples Examples that do not fit the company
The topic they engaged with Opens with a problem they work on Personal details pulled from a profile
The date Decides who to write to first Old contacts get the same push as new ones
A work email that is accurate Gets the email delivered Bounces, then a paused campaign
A proof link Lets you check the person still works there Emails to people who left

Tell the software to write about the topic. A line like "I saw you engaged with a guide on prompt injection" reads as tracking. People may not remember the content. The topic tells you what they work on.

See every field on a real lead, contacts hidden, on the sample leads page.

Why a weak list costs more with an AI SDR

Mail services judge a sender by how people react. Yahoo asks senders to keep the spam rate below 0.3%. Its rules have been enforced since February 2024; we read them on 2026-10-30. Gmail and Outlook.com set their own rules for senders of over 5,000 emails a day.

Your sending tool watches bounces, too. Woodpecker pauses a campaign at 2% bounces by default. An Instantly template pauses at over 2% hard bounces. It waits until 200 emails have gone out in 7 days.

So 5 bad emails in 100 can stop a campaign in its first week. An AI SDR sends more each day than a person. It reaches that line sooner.

SPF, DKIM and DMARC are the DNS records that prove a mail came from your domain. Set them up before the first send, whatever tool you use.

Three ways to fill an AI SDR, or skip it

Prices from each vendor's own page, checked on 2026-10-30. Our price comes from the pricing page.

Path What you pay How fast The risk
An AI SDR on a list you build AiSDR: $1.50 per person written to. Salesforge: $499 a month, billed quarterly, after a demo. Plus your list tools Sends in days, once the list is ready The list is only as good as your filters. Bounces pause the campaign
An AI SDR on leads you buy The same software, plus $2,000 for 50 leads from us, paid once Sends in days, once the leads arrive Fewer people to write to. Each lead is a person who engaged with content on your topic
You or an SDR, writing to leads you buy $2,000 for 50 leads. An SDR's pay is about $6,667 a month (The Bridge Group, 2025) Slower: you write each email Slower, and your time. Each email can carry what you know about the buyer

On 50 people, AiSDR's pay-as-you-go price is about $75 to write to them all. The software is the small cost. The list is the larger one, in money or in hours.

Test a list before you load it

Run these checks on any list, ours included, before the AI SDR sends a single email.

  1. Run the general checks first. Use a checklist before you buy any lead. Its nine questions cover the person, the date, the checks and the terms
  2. Run every email through an email checker. Take out each one it marks as bad. Keep the bounce rate under the 2% your tool watches
  3. Check that each lead has a topic. No topic means the software fills the gap with guesses
  4. Send the first 50 by hand, or from a spare domain. Read the replies and the bounces before the software takes over
  5. Write the first email yourself. Give the AI SDR your words and your offer. Let it change the details, not the point

Questions

Is an AI SDR better than buying leads?

They do different jobs. An AI SDR writes and sends. Leads decide who gets the emails. A good AI SDR on a weak list sends weak emails at scale.

Can an AI SDR find its own leads?

Some can. AiSDR charges per person it prospects, so it finds the people for you. It finds them by your filters, such as role and company size. Filters do not show who looked into your topic recently.

How much does an AI SDR cost?

On 2026-10-30, AiSDR charged $1.50 per person written to, with no monthly fee. Salesforge charged $499 a month, billed quarterly, after a demo.

What bounce rate is safe for an AI SDR?

Two sending tools we checked pause at 2% by default or in their template. Keep yours under that. Run every email through a checker first.

Can I load your leads into an AI SDR?

Yes. You get a file with a name, job title, work email, phone and company. It also holds the topic they engaged with, the date and a proof link. Every email is accurate: they engaged with content sent to that address. If one in a paid pack still bounces, tell us within 7 days. We send a new lead.

Test it on your own buyers

Give us your work email, then tell us who you sell to. We send 10 leads that fit, with contacts, free. Load them into your AI SDR, or write to them yourself.
